Organization Name: Fantsuam Foundation

[Africa - Nigeria]

Fatsuam Foundation

Fantsuam Foundation's overall objective is to promote access to ICT facilities and skills' training among women in rural communities in Nigeria. In partnership with these communities, the Foundation is setting up Community Learning Centres (CLCs), where trainings and access to ICT equipment is provided. The BayanLoco Community Learning Centre has been the most successful among the CLCs and received the first African Hafkin Prize. Part of the monetary award was set aside to provide scholarships to women and girls who enrolled in IT skills training at the Centre.
GEM evaluation was used to find out if the services provided in the CLC contribute to women and girls' empowerment. One of the main questions raised in their evaluation was how the CLC was able to address the biases and fears of women in relation to ICTs.Read more

Developing Software in an Equal and Collaborative Environment

Organization Name: Community Communications Online (c2o)

[Asia/Pacific - Australia]

Community Communications Online (c2o) is an Australian-based applications service provider that targets local activist and civil society groups. One of the main services they provide is a web content management tool called Web Origami Kit (WOK), which allows for collaborative web-based multimedia projects. c2o tested and implemented an evaluation plan based on GEM on a project called D3, a prototype interactive story-telling engine that runs through the Melbourne Central Business District, gathering images and stories. D3 is currently being managed by the Australian Centre for the Moving Image, with c2o providing creative and technical support for the project.
GEM was not utilized to specifically address the experience of women in using the WOK, but as a holistic ICT evaluation methodology. c2o were particularly looking into how gender, race and age affected the formal and informal roles the various project team members played for the duration of the development of the project.Read more

Together for our Future: Gender Sensitive Communication for Community Initiatives

Organization Name: Chasquinet and Colinas del Norte

[Latin America and Caribbean - Ecuador]

Facilitation Team

Chasquinet used GEM to support planning and evaluation of a unique participatory community telecentre initiative in Colinas del Norte, located in the mountains that surround Quito, 3,100 mts high, and considered a "model community" by municipal authorities. Communication is one of the areas where the community has decided to focus their work. In order to do so, a group of young people were appointed to be responsible for this task. However teen-aged women’s participation in this project is not as active or as desired mainly because of cultural prejudices.
GEM provided a framework for analysis of the community communication strategies, and how to incorporate a gender perspective in it. Through the GEM evaluation process, several gender sensitisation workshops were conducted in the community. One of Chasquinet's evaluation outputs is a manual for working at telecentres and popular communications projects using GEM.
