Together for our Future: Gender Sensitive Communication for Community Initiatives

Organization Name: Chasquinet and Colinas del Norte

[Latin America and Caribbean - Ecuador]

Facilitation Team

Chasquinet used GEM to support planning and evaluation of a unique participatory community telecentre initiative in Colinas del Norte, located in the mountains that surround Quito, 3,100 mts high, and considered a "model community" by municipal authorities. Communication is one of the areas where the community has decided to focus their work. In order to do so, a group of young people were appointed to be responsible for this task. However teen-aged women’s participation in this project is not as active or as desired mainly because of cultural prejudices.
GEM provided a framework for analysis of the community communication strategies, and how to incorporate a gender perspective in it. Through the GEM evaluation process, several gender sensitisation workshops were conducted in the community. One of Chasquinet's evaluation outputs is a manual for working at telecentres and popular communications projects using GEM.

Identification of Equity Issues in ICT Educational Programme Planning

Organization Name: Popular Radio Schools Foundation

[Latin America and Caribbean - Ecuador]

ERPE- local women experimenting with the taperecorder

Fundación ERPE (The Popular Radio Schools Foundation) was created in the early 1960’s in Riobamba (Ecuador) by a local Catholic bishop, Mons Leonidas Proaño, who was a reknowned human rights activist and who struggled for the rights of indigenous people in Ecuador. He believed in communications as essential for development and social change.
The Foundation is currently planning to launch a new ICT programme for education and development by installing telecentres in rural schools, community centres and in organisations run by the people.
They decided to use GEM as a tool for gender sensitisation and pre-diagnosis of the equity issues related to the Educational Telecentres Project and other communications work produced by ERPE. Their evaluation explored issues such as equity in the participation of women and men in ICT projects, decision-making and implementation, taking into account race, language and age.Read more
